UFC commentator Joe Rogan has fired a warning to Conor McGregor after the former UFC champion called out welterweight king Kamaru Usman.

‘Notorious’, 33, has been absent from the octagon since breaking his leg in a defeat to Dustin Poirier in July 2021.

Having stepped up his recovery, McGregor is thought to be targeting an MMA comeback this summer, although UFC president Dana White has suggested it's move likely it will happen in the autumn.

The Irishman has called out Charles Oliveira, the current lightweight champion, and now Usman, who holds the welterweight crown.

Usman responded to McGregor by suggesting a fight would result in a 'murder scene' - and Rogan has also warned the former two-weight champ to be wary of the Nigerian.

"Now he's talking about fighting Kamaru Usman - be careful what you ask for," the UFC pundit said about McGregor on his '' podcast.

"Be careful what you ask for. Usman is a big man, and he's top of the food chain right now."

Questions linger over McGregor’s place among the current elite in MMA following three defeats in his last four bouts.

He claimed to weigh 190lbs in December, which puts him in the light-heavyweight division and 20lbs too heavy for a welterweight fight, as things stand.

However, it sounds like McGregor intends to trim down and take a shot at Usman.

"I believe versus Usman for the 170lb title for my comeback is the one I'm eyeballing at the minute," he said on the Mac Life podcast.

"I haven't really said that to no one to be honest, I've only been thinking that for the last couple of days because for what cut the weight? I've already won the 155lb title, I got myself down to a lightweight frame, but I'm big now.

"I feel big, I feel strong, I feel healthy, I've got good energy. I'm coming back after a gruesome injury. I do not want to deplete myself, there should be no need to deplete myself.

"And I feel confident against Usman. A jab happy, sloppy, orthodox wrestler with no submissions whatsoever. What's he going to do? Where's the danger here? I don't see a danger with him.

"His ground-and-pound isn't strong, plus he's on the older side. And then plus the world is to be took again. The triple crown.

"No one's ever obtained three knockouts in three weight divisions moving up like I have already, but no one's ever obtained three UFC world titles cross three divisions like I will do also if we make this fight."
