UFC superstar Conor McGregor has given one of his biggest rivals some medical advice while he battles a scary infection in hospital.

After getting back in the win column at UFC 281 last month, it appeared Dustin Poirier was about to close 2022 out on a positive note.

Unfortunately, he has been struck down by a staph infection that was not responding to antibiotics and left him confined to a hospital bed for the past few days.

Staph infections are caused by staphylococcus bacteria, which are primarily found on the ground and on human skin. Many MMA fighters contract the infection due to the close-contact nature of the sport.

“Going on day two in the hospital. S*** is getting serious,” Poirier tweeted on Monday before his wife provided a video update to her Instagram followers and said the infection seemed to be getting worse.

Notorious initially took a cheeky dig when he found out his rival was hospitalised by tweeting, "Heal up soon scruffy knickers,” before later making threats to kill Poirier.

The Diamond responded by becoming the latest fighter to accuse McGregor of using performance-enhancing substances during his injury layoff.

On Tuesday evening, Poirier posted an up-close photo of his foot which looks like something out of a horror movie but is apparently on the mend, he tweeted: "Antibiotics are working. Getting outta the hospital tomorrow morning!"

McGregor reacted to the picture by insinuating it is karma for Poirier mocking the foot injury he suffered at UFC 264 and suggesting he gets the foot amputated and keeps it as a Halloween prop.

“Karma the left paw an all haha chop that thing off keep it for Halloween pal hahahaha,” McGregor wrote in a since-deleted tweet.

Poirier picked up back-to-back wins over McGregor in 2021 after suffering a first-round knockout defeat when they first fought all the way back in 2014.

However, their latest fight in July 2021 ended inconclusively as the Irishman fractured his tibia and fibula in the first round before immediately demanding a fourth fight.

The Diamond mocked his rival by mimicking his billi-strut while he lay on the ground in the Octagon and that is why McGregor referred to his current situation as karma.

Another fight between the legendary duo could well be on the cards for 2023 if they both fully recover from their current ailments that have left one man hospitalised and the other out of action for 18 months.
