Ex-UFC fighter Brendan Schaub has ripped into Dana White’s Power Slap League after watching its debut event.

Slap fighting is a relatively new sport that involves two competitors on either side of a podium taking turns to slap each other in the face as hard as they can.

The aim is to knock out or make your opponent quit and the results can be extremely brutal as evidenced by a recent RXF event in Romania that caught the attention of UFC superstar Conor McGregor.

The former dual-weight UFC champion’s newfound interest in slap fighting was timely, considering Dana White’s Power Slap League debuted on Wednesday evening.

It is regulated by the Nevada State Athletic Commission [NSAC], with fighters to be given 30 seconds to deliver the slap, with another 30 seconds for recovery.

The debut episode of the slap-fighting competition Power Slap: Road to the Title was supposed to air on January 11 but was delayed by one week due to its namesake being caught on camera hitting his wife on New Year’s Eve.

Prior to White slapping his wife, Power Slap was already controversial, as it seems to require no skill and competitors are taking unnecessary blows to the head.

However, after the 53-year-old slapped his wife, fans and high-profile figures such as MMA journalist Ariel Helwani called for the organisation to be dissolved.

It wasn’t, and despite everything, aired following a minor delay.

But it didn't pull in the viewers as reports from the US suggest just 295,000 people tuned in to watch the first episode.

An intrigued Schaub tuned into the first episode before taking to social media to claim it is ‘the stupidest s***’ he’s ever seen and expressing his opinion that it does serious harm to the sport of MMA.

He tweeted: “Checking out the Slap fight league. This is the stupidest s*** I’ve ever seen. The fact it’s associated with the UFC sets the sport back 10 yrs. All that being said it’s entertaining. Anyone wanna bet it’s not around in a year?”

The former UFC heavyweight contender, who now makes a living as a comedian and podcaster, added that he will be getting some of his famous pals around to watch the Power Slap final, whenever it is.

Schaub added: “Also, you’re crazy if you don’t think I’m doing a Fight companion for the Slap league championship. Whenever that is. Whiskey, friends, and slapping. How can I NOT! It’s sooo insane.”
