UFC 205 results: Conor McGregor beats Eddie Alvarez to win lightweight title

Who won the Conor McGregor fight?

History has been made.

The Notorious Conor McGregor has become the first fighter in UFC history to become a two-weight world champion simultaneously. And he did it in style.

McGregor dominated the fight from start to finish, knocking his opponent Eddie Alvarez to the ground three times in only the first round. Alvarez, to his credit, managed to make it to the break but in the second round, it was exactly the same.

He came out and tried to use his wrestling ability, knowing the first round was tactically all wrong from his point of view. But even reverting to what appeared to be his biggest advantage over the Irishmen, McGregor superbly stuffed all take down attempts and landed a huge left hand as Alvarez’s final attempt was to no avail.

After the American hit the ground once again, referee John McCarthy was quick to step in and ultimately crown McGregor the new UFC lightweight champion.

“They’re not on my level,” he said. “You got to have size, reach, length. You’ve got to have some attributes. If you come in here in any way equal to me, I’m going to rip your whole head off and that’s it.

“I’ve been saying it every time. Eddie is a solid competitor. Eddie’s a warrior, but he shouldn’t have been in here with me.”

Having teased everyone with the promises of major announcement in the lead up to the event, the crowd were dying to find out what that might be and it seemed McGregor was about to reveal all inside the octagon when being interviewed by Joe Rogan. However, he had this to say instead: “Listen, I’ve spent a lot of time slating everybody in the company. Backstage I'm starting fights with everybody. I’ve ridiculed everyone on the roster and I just want to say from the bottom of my heart, I’d like to take this chance to apologise to absolutely nobody.

"I’m the double champ and he does whatever the f*** he wants.”

In the post-fight press conference McGregor then told the media he was going to become a dad.

“I have a few announcements. One, I'm going to be a daddy in the next year. I'm c****ing my jocks I’m not going to lie. I don’t even know what way to take it, it’s going to be messing with my head because I don’t want to be bringing a child into anything like this, you know?

"I don’t even want any of that celebrity s***, I hate all that, I don’t want my family to be like that. So that’s a little thing in the back of my head. So I'm going to just have this baby, take a little bit of time and see what way I feel after that."
