Liam Lawson wants Red Bull seat but admits he could leave to fulfil Formula 1 dream

Liam Lawson still finds himself without a drive heading into 2025, despite an impressive cameo for Alpha Tauri last year.
Currently a Red Bull reserve driver, the Kiwi gained many admirers during the 2023 campaign after he stepped up to replace the injured Daniel Ricciardo part way through the season.
An impressive five-race stint left him with an average finishing position of 12th and two world championship points after finishing ninth in Singapore.
However, the Kiwi is running out of options for a seat in F1 for 2025 after Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez signed a new two-year contract to stay with the current champions.
The contract extension for the Mexican has ended Lawson’s dream of getting a seat at the team in the near future.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Lawson shed light on his current situation.
He said: “Everything is changing at the moment since there’s a lot of drivers moving around so I don’t really know where I slot into that and if I do at all.
“But it is something that I am working towards every single day at the moment”
On whether he’d take a step away from his current team to be given an opportunity elsewhere, Lawson joked: “You know I can’t answer this!
“Honestly at the end of the day I would love to be with Red Bull and Formula 1, they are the strongest team at the moment and this is my sixth year with Red Bull.
“So if I could choose I would love to be with Red Bull, but obviously there is no seat there and my goal is Formula 1 so that could be anywhere.”
Despite Lawson’s Red Bull pathway blocked by Sergio Perez, the Kiwi still has some options going into the 2025 season.
There will be nine drivers out of contract come the end of the 2024 season including Carlos Sainz, Pierre Gasly, Esteban Ocon, Logan Sargeant, Daniel Ricciardo, Yuki Tsunoda, Valtteri Bottas, Zhou Guanyu and Kevin Magnussen.
This leaves Alpine, Haas and Visa Cash App RB F1 Team all without a confirmed driver lineup ahead of the 2025 season.
Lawson’s previous track record at the RB F1 Team, formerly known as Alpha Tauri, has given him a great shout to be in contention to gain the seat and stay within the Red Bull family
There will undoubtedly be a huge shuffle of the grid come the start of the 2025 season, and Lawson will be banking on the fact his impressive cameo will put him in pole position for a seat.
Liam Lawson was speaking to talkSPORT at the launch of EA Sports F1 24, which is out now on all platforms.
