The AFC's Chiefs are the designated home team in this season's 'Big Game' at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

The defending champions chose to wear their home red colours meaning the 49ers are the road team and will be wearing their white uniforms.

Why do the Chiefs have 'NKH' on their Super Bowl jerseys and what does it mean?

The Chiefs shared a sneak preview of Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce in their Super Bowl threads and NFL fans noticed a peculiar detail on the uniforms.

Eagle-eyed supporters have spotted a special gold and red patch on the right side of the jerseys in the shape of a football featuring the letters 'NKH'.

The letters 'NKH' are a special tribute to Norma Knobel Hunt, the matriarch of the Hunt family who own the Chiefs.

Norma Hunt was a Chiefs minority owner and the mother of current Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt, who passed away on 4 June, 2023, at the age of 85.

Sadly, this will be the Chiefs' first Super Bowl appearance without her in attendance and they've decided to pay a special tribute to her.

The team announced in September that it would wear the 'NKH' patch in her honour throughout the season.

"My family and I are so proud to honour our mother's life and legacy this season," Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said at the time.

";My mom loved football, and she loved the Chiefs. She also believed in the power of sports to unite communities, and the impact sports can have on young people.

"While it will be difficult to begin football season without her, we look forward to continuing her legacy of attending every Super Bowl with the creation of the Norma Hunt Super Bowl Champion of Education program."

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes paid tribute to Norma Hunt during his postgame speech following the win against the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship game.

"Well obviously, a very special day for our family," Clark Hunt following the win.

"Any time you have a chance to compete for a championship, it's a special opportunity. Being able to bring home another Lamar Hunt Trophy is special for our family, it's special for the organization.

"It was so thoughtful of Patrick to mention my mother up there on the stage."

The 'NKH' patch is on the opposite side to some other interesting details on the Chiefs' jerseys.

On the left side of the uniforms is a captain patch for Mahomes and an AFL patch that pays homage to the late Lamar Hunt - the founder and former owner of the Chiefs, as well as Clark Hunt's father.

The Chiefs wore red the last time they faced the 49ers in a Super Bowl (2020).

They'll be hoping that omen, as well as the 'NKH' patch, will bring them similar luck this year.
