Why Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce have special gold badge on their Super Bowl jerseys

Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce will once again lead their team out in a Super Bowl this evening.
When the Kansas City Chiefs duo finally step out onto the field at Allegiant Stadium against the San Francisco 49ers it will be their fourth Super Bowl appearance in five years.
During the game, Mahomes and Kelce will be among the few Kansas City players wearing a captain's 'C' patch on their uniforms.
The quarterback/tight end tandem, as well as cornerback L'Jarius Sneed, defensive tackle Chris Jones, kicker Harrison Butker and punter Tommy Townsend, have been selected as the Chiefs' 2024 playoff captains.
Mahomes and Kelce's emblem will be doubly special though as their captain's 'C' patch will be gold.
The number of gold stars on the special patch, which is in team colours, represents the number of years a player has been named captain by a team.
If the player has been named captain for longer than four years, the 'C' on the patch is gold.
Mahomes and Kelce's gold captain's patch can be seen on the left side of their Super Bowl LVIII jerseys, opposite the 'NKH' patch which pays tribute to a team icon.
The Chiefs recently held a photo-shoot with the six elected postseason captains and Kelce spoke about the 'honour' of being named.
He also revealed that head coach Andy Reid usually switches up the team captains for every regular season game.
“A lot of the times, it’s a guy that’s from the city that we’re playing or a guy that’s from the team that we’ve played, and he gets them a chance to lead this team into battle,†Kelce said.
However, when it comes to the playoffs, Reid holds a team vote.
"He lets the players vote on who the captains are and who the guys are that emerged throughout the entire season, whose going to lead us into battle for the remainder of the season," Kelce explained.
"That just means it’s that big of an honour to be able to be named a captain, to be on that sheet of paper that he’s handing around that guys have to choose from.
"I know every single year I’ve been that I’ve been extremely appreciative and there’s a lot of pride in my chest to be able to lead these guys out there."
Kelce, Mahomes and Townsend were team captains in last year's Super Bowl when the Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35.
Defensive tackle Chris Jones, running back Jerick McKinnon, and linebacker Nick Bolton were also named team captains for the 2023 postseason.
In three games so far this postseason, Mahomes has thrown for 718 passing yards with five touchdowns and zero interceptions.
Kelce, meanwhile, has caught 23 catches for 262 yards and three touchdowns in the three games leading up to the 'Big Game'.
One of the tight end's touchdowns came in the first quarter of the AFC Championship game at MT&T Bank Stadium against the Baltimore Ravens.
Kelce caught a 19-yard dart from Mahomes to register the first points of the game and put the Chiefs well on their way to a 17-10 road victory.
The Niners are now the only team standing in their way of wining consecutive Super Bowl titles and their third overall.
