Christian McCaffrey earns in one week what biggest surprise player of NFL does in one season with stunning $125 million paycheck disparity

Jordan Mason's surprise story keeps getting better.
Especially when money is factored in.
The third-year undrafted running back became the of Week 1, rushing for 147 yards and a touchdown during the San Francisco 49ers' 32-19 victory over Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets.
After Mason wrecked fantasy leagues and upset sports bettors, the immediate focus was on when the Tennessee native and Georgia Tech product first learned that he would start on Monday Night Football -- and when reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year Christian McCaffrey would be benched.
But a closer look at Mason's annual paycheck made his surprise story even more impressive.
During Mason's initial two NFL seasons, he played in 33 games but never started.
Since he was undrafted, the 25-year-old running back signed a relatively low three-year, $2.5 million contract with the 49ers.
Mason has a base salary of $985,000 this season, which accounts for less than 1 percent of San Francisco's salary cap and is one of the most affordable contracts in the league.
Compared to McCaffrey, Mason is making pennies.
"Under a mil for the whole year is nuts," one fan tweeted.
McCaffrey, the No. 8 overall pick in 2017 out of Stanford, earned $11.1 million as a rookie with Carolina and saw his annual pay increase to $22.3 million in 2020.
In June, the three-time Pro Bowler signed a two-year, $38 million extension with the 49ers after reaching the Super Bowl.
Despite being injured and a late scratch in Week 1, McCaffrey is set to earn $16 million this season.
His weekly paycheck is $940,000.
With Mason making $985,000 for the entire 2024 campaign, he's only making $45,000 more than the injured McCaffrey earns in a single NFL week.
"That’s a gap," a fan posted.
"Mason will get his paycheck," a second fan tweeted.
"7th Round draft picks and UDFA's that pan out are payroll gold," a third fan wrote.
The 49ers will look to go 2-0 on Sunday when they face the Minnesota Vikings on the road.
McCaffrey is likely to miss Week 2, which is another opportunity for Mason to add to his growing NFL name.
San Francisco rivals Kansas City, Detroit, Houston and Dallas as the Super Bowl favorite this season.
