How much is Kendrick Lamar getting paid for Super Bowl LIX halftime show performance?

Kendrick Lamar will become the latest music superstar to have the honour of performing in the Super Bowl halftime show this evening.
The 22-time Grammy Award winner is set to follow in the footsteps of the greatest in his industry, emulating Michael Jackson, Prince, Beyonce and more.
It's already been a big week for Lamar after he won five gongs at the 67th Grammy Awards in Los Angeles last Sunday including for Record of the Year and for Best Music Video.
And now he will grace the field at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans as the Chiefs look to achieve a historic three-peat against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Last year, Usher performed at halftime in the meeting between the Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers at Allegiant Stadium.
The halftime show is one of the most iconic parts of the Super Bowl and you’d expect artists to be handed a hefty cheque for their appearance.
However, that’s most definitely not the case…
Lamar will actually NOT be getting paid for his Super Bowl halftime performance.
This has always been the case, with Usher not receiving a dime last year either.
The NFL has previously said that they do not pay the artists for their performances, but that they do help to cover expenses and production costs.
According to Forbes, artists don’t receive any payment other than on a , which is a minimum guaranteed in a union contract.
This is reported to be around $1,000 (£804) a day and that is of course a very small fraction of the sums artists would usually receive on a regular basis.
So, some may think that the NFL are pretty stingy to not pay their performers, but their coverage of other costs is huge.
They help provide payment for the set, special effects and any extras when it comes to the production of the performance.
In 2020, Shakira and Jennifer Lopez’s performance is said to have cost around $13million, while in 2021, the Weeknd’s cost was very similar.
Covering those costs as well as the paychecks and expenses of staff involved means the NFL do invest a lot of money into the halftime show.
Albeit, leaving the artist with no payment for the event.

So with no payment for the Super Bowl halftime show, what’s in it for the artists?
Well, it’s the major exposure that the iconic performance brings with it.
Even for one of the industry’s legends, Usher, at last year’s big game, the benefits that came with the opportunity were huge.
His Spotify streaming numbers were after his performance in 2024.
That is incredible growth and it’s even more impressive considering Usher is a very well-known artist worldwide already,
For Lamar this year, it’s those eyeballs on his songs and show that he will value the highest rather than a payment from the NFL.
