Brock Purdy is Mr. Irrelevant no more.

The 25-year-old quarterback, drafted last in 2022 by the San Francisco 49ers, has defied expectations by becoming a starter and leading his team to the Super Bowl.

And now, he's in line for a bumper contract extension - but getting a deal over the line is proving a long-running business.

Purdy is entering the final year of his rookie deal, which is projected to pay him a little over $5million in 2025, but much of the talk in the off-season has been about how San Francisco will tie him down long-term.

He is regarded by many, including 49ers owner Jed York, as a top 10 NFL quarterback and will therefore seek a deal that sees him land in similar territory to the highest-paid stars.

Currently, 10 signal callers have contracts that average at least $50m per year.

Dak Prescott is at the top of the list with a $60m salary.

The likes of Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, Jordan Love and Trevor Lawrence are not far behind earning $55m a year, while Tua Tagovailoa, Jared Goff, Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson and Jalen Hurts all earn over $50m.

Purdy is said to be chasing an extension in that ballpark, and this week, an NFL veteran has urged San Francisco to get the deal done.

Chase Daniel, who spent 14 years in the league, believes locking Purdy to a $50m contract would be a 'bargain' for the 49ers.

"I would say, and I've heard this number floated out, $50m. Will it be above, or will it be below?" Daniel said on Fox Sports, The Faculty.

"It would be concerning to me if they just give him $50m. I believe he needs more. Look at the top 11 or 12 highest-paid quarterbacks right now in the NFL.

"Dak Prescott, $60m. Josh Allen, Joe Burrow. Then you get to like, 'Hey, I think Jordan Love is a better player than Brock Purdy.' But Brock has done more. Then you get to Trevor Lawrence, Brock has done way more.

"Justin Herbert, you know, he's done more than Herbert, although the talent is there.

"If you gave Brock Purdy $50m right now, he would slot in at number 11. Now, is he the 11th best quarterback in the league? Give or take, that's fair."

Daniel suggested that offering the QB $50m a year would be a 'reasonable deal' and also fit into the 49ers salary cap, suggesting the team could go higher.

He concluded: "$53m to $56m is a bargain for Brock Purdy, in my opinion."

While Purdy and the 49ers have not been sweating too much on locking in the deal in recent months, an important deadline is looming.

"A for signing Purdy might be by May 27 when San Francisco begins phase three of off-season workouts," former agent Joel Corry, who now works with CBS Sports, recently said.

"The 10 days of organized team activities can start being held where 11-on-11 drills are permitted. The 49ers shouldn't be surprised if Purdy is absent from off-season workouts as long as he doesn't have a new deal."

While everything through that point is voluntary, Purdy has already been in attendance for the start of the off-season workout program, even without a deal.

The 49ers' mandatory minicamp takes place on June 10 and 11, and will be the team's last gathering before breaking until training camp.

With both San Francisco and Purdy signalling that they are committed for the long-term, it would make sense for a deal to be agreed in the coming weeks.
