Emma Raducanu wins prestigious Laureus World Sports Award as Robert Lewandowski honoured for record-breaking season and Max Verstappen named best sportsman

Emma Raducanu, Robert Lewandowski and Max Verstappen were among the winners at the prestigious 2022 Laureus World Sports Awards.

The British tennis star, 19, shocked the world when she won the US Open, without dropping a set, after coming through qualifying.

She also became the first British woman to win a Grand Slam since Virginia Wade in 1977 and Raducanu picked up the Breakthrough of the Year award.

After receiving her prestigious Laureus award at a digital ceremony hosted from Seville, Raducanu said: "It has been a great year for me.

"Thank you to all the Laureus Academy Members for voting for me. I really want to congratulate all the other nominees too.”

Teenage British skateboarder Sky Brown received the Comeback of the Year prize after she won a medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

Brown had suffered multiple skull fractures in a training fall in May 2020, but fought her way back to compete for at the Games and become Britain's youngest Olympic medallist.

Bayern Munich hero Lewandowski received the Exceptional Achievement Award for breaking Gerd Muller’s Bundesliga scoring record.

The striker scored an incredible 41 league goals, in just 29 games, to beat the longstanding record by the German.

Elsewhere, Formula One world champion Max Verstappen and Jamaican sprinter Elaine Thompson-Herah were named the Laureus World Sportsman and World Sportswoman of the Year.

Italy's men's football side were voted Team of the Year following their triumph over England in the European Championship final.

Seven-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady was honoured with the Laureus Lifetime Achievement Award.
