I was once dubbed Mr Boring of snooker now I DJ techno gigs at Glastonbury

Steve Davis dominated snooker during its glory days of the 1980s but he has since put the cue away and brought out the decks.

It is not your usual change of lifestyle, world's best snooker player to DJing techno gigs at Glastonbury.

But that is exactly the path Davis has taken, having been branded Mr Boring not that long ago.

Speaking to the in 2019, he said: "I didn’t know my life would turn out like this. You haven’t got a clue... it’s ridiculous.”

Taking to the stage at Glastonbury, Davis formed a band called The Utopia Strong, playing techno music to progheads with the snooker legend on modular synth.

“My life seems to have gone in reverse,” he added.

“I started off as a snooker player practising for eight hours a day in a dark room, and I ended up at Glastonbury DJing.

“You just don’t know what is going to happen.”

Davis was once regarded as the best snooker player in the world, reaching eight World Championship finals in nine years in the 1980s and winning six of them.

For seven consecutive seasons, he held the spot of No. 1 in the world during a time when Alex Higgins, Cliff Thorburn and Ray Reardon were all clambering for the biggest prizes.

It was a golden age for the sport, dominated by as much action away from the table as there was on it, something that Davis never particularly got involved with.

Perhaps that is where the harsh nickname Mr Boring came from but after retiring in 2016, 38 seasons being a professional, he turned to his first love - music.

“I come from another world,” Davis said.

“The snooker world is not that way so it passed me by. Music is my drug of choice. I’ll be having a few beers though, the legal ones.”

While at school, Davis became infatuated with progressive rock and after his legendary snooker career came to an end, he formed an electronic and experimental band with fellow musician Kavus Torabi.

Having played Glastonbury twice, the 65-year-old has also released an album in 2019 and has worked as a producer for several other musical projects as well.

But while Davis continues his love of DJing, any chance of hitting the mainstream charts looks miniscule at best.

He added: “I don’t think you’ll see me swinging on a wrecking ball naked. I’ll leave that to Miley Cyrus.”
