Alex Carey was booed onto the Headingley pitch at the third Ashes Test after his part in the controversial end to the second Test.

He helped Australia take a 2-0 lead in the series with a stumping of Jonny Bairstow on the final day at Lord's which proved to be a pivotal moment.

The wicket sent shockwaves through the sport with even British prime minister Rishi Sunak and his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese having their say on the matter.

England fans greeted the wicket-keeper as he made his way out onto the Headingley pitch to a chorus of boos.

Shortly after he entered the crease chants of 'shoes off if you hate Carey' rang around the Yorkshire cricket ground.

Carey was dropped by Joe Root on five but England did a brilliant job of skittling through Australia in the evening session with Chris Woakes claiming the wicket of Travis Head on the next ball.

Mark Wood, who claimed a brilliant five-wicket haul, then bowled Mitchell Starc and also got Aussie captain Pat Cummins out in the same over before Carey went for eight with Woakes catching his attempted slog.

Earlier, England reduced the visitors to 85-4 before a brilliant partnership of 155 between Mitchell Marsh and Head stabilised things for them.

Australia were all out for 263 but the Test is still firmly in the balance with England posting a score of 68-3 at stumps with the Aussies claiming the wickets of Ben Duckett, Harry Brook and Zak Crawley.

England must win if they're to stand any chance of regaining the Ashes having not won a series against their rivals since 2015.
