Zuckerberg was initially involved in a back-and-forth with Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

The rival billionaires agreed to face each other in an MMA fight, only for talks to drag on and ultimately lead to nothing.

Regardless, Zuckerberg has said he was still training for a competitive bout.

The identity of his potential opponent is unknown.

Now though, he will not be able to compete for some time.

"Tore my ACL sparring and just got out of surgery to replace it," he posted on Friday night.

"Grateful for the doctors and team taking care of me.

"I was training for a competitive MMA fight early next year, but now that's delayed a bit. Still looking forward to doing it after I recover.

"Thanks to everyone for the love and support."

Zuckerberg received support from some sectors of the MMA community.

UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones commented: "We got this."

While Israel Adesanya reacted with a saluting emoji.

Dan Hooker added: "Heal up mate, all the best with recovery."
