Freed Angel Cabrera begs for forgiveness after returning to golf from prison

Angel Cabrera has begged for forgiveness as he prepares to make his return to golf’s PGA tour following his release from prison.
The two-time major champion was released on parole in August having served two-and-a-half years for domestic violence.
The 54-year-old was sentenced in 2021 for assaulting, threatening and harassing former partner of two years, Cecilia Torres Mana.
He was convicted of a further assault against another former partner, Micaela Escudero in November 2022, resulting in an extended prison sentence.
The Argentine confirmed he is currently undergoing treatment for alcohol addiction but has been cleared to return to PGA Tour events.
Cabrera made his return to action in last week’s Abierto del Litoral in Rosario, Argentina, finishing tenth. The event was part of the PGA Tour Latinoamerica Developmental Series.
Speaking to Golf Digest, as quoted by , on his chequered past, Cabrera said: “I refused to listen to anyone and did what I wanted, how I wanted and when I wanted.
"That was wrong. I ask Micaela for forgiveness. I ask Celia for forgiveness. They had the bad luck of being with me when I was at my worst. I wasn’t the devil but I did bad things.
“I am deeply embarrassed because I disappointed the people closest to me — and everyone who loves me through golf. Golf gave me everything, and I know I will never be able to repay the debt I owe this sport.”
It remains to be seen whether Cabrera will be invited to the Masters next April after Augusta National kept schtum when quizzed.
Previous champions have lifetime exemption but as yet, no decision has been made on Cabrera’s inclusion.
