Grand National 2024 LIVE: I Am Maximus and Paul Townend produce incredible late burst to take win at Aintree for Willie Mullins

The 2024 Grand National served up an iconic race that Paul Townend on I Am Maximus won.

The Irishman and Willie Mullins' horse came from nowhere after the last fence stormed from nowhere to win.

Lat year's winner, Corach Rambler, fell at the first fence to ensure there would be no back-to-back wins.

Instead, it was Mullins and Townend who were victorious.

Right, that's it from us this afternoon as I Am Maximus and Paul Townend combined to produce a stunning display at the 2024 Grand National.

Townend came from nowhere to storm to victory ahead of Rachael Blackmore on Minella Indo.

That made it wins in the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Grand National this year for Townend and Willie Mullins.

It was an excellent race and we hope you enjoyed the coverage.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - APRIL 13: Jockey Paul Townend celebrates with the crowds after winning the Randox Grand National riding I Am Maximus at Aintree Racecourse on April 13, 2024 in Liverpool, England. One of the highlights of the racing calendar the Grand National is a steeplechase dating back to 1892. Poor Corach Rambler. The 2023 champion never got the chance to test himself against the rest of the field because he fell at the first fence.

The Scottish horse hit the fence hard and unseated Derek Fox, meaning his race was run within ten seconds of the start.

It's a shame it ended the way it did, but he's still a Grand National winner and no one can take that away.

Although not ever horse finished, we are pleased to report that every jockey and runner has escaped injury.

Mac Tottie has been taken for further assessment, but has avoided anything serious.

  • Mullins reacts to another major win

It's been some year for Willie Mullins and Paul Towned with a Cheltenham Gold winner and now a Grand National champion as well.

The Irish trainer has enjoyed an incredible year, and he has been speaking to ITV about I Am Maximus' win.

He said: "I think Paul was super because the horse wasn't giving him a lot of help.

"But he always has confidence in his horse, and you could see he was just biding his time, and he delivered.

"I didn't say anything until he was well over the last fence, but then, I let go.

"I am buzzing, it's huge, and as far as I know, our team are back in good order with no injuries, so happy we have a full complement of horses and riders."

Paul Townend managed to get something extra out of his horse to deny Rachael Blackmore, and he's been speaking to ITV about the race.

He said: "What an unbelievable horse. It's a bit surreal .

"I started backing off because of the sheer volume of horses pushing down, so you've got to be a little careful.

"But I had a feeling once I got him out, he was going to start motoring, and he did.

"The ones in front of me I had in my sights, and I was hoping he would respond like I thought he would.

"Grand Nationals are different [to win], and I can't believe it."

  • The 2024 Grand National

There are almost too many horses to look into, but there are a few that should pique some interest.

I Am Maximus is the current favourite, with Paul Townend on board.

Rachael Blackmore's steed for this race is Minella Indo.

Delta Work is also one well worth keeping an eye out for.

  • The 2024 Grand National

So, can Corach Rambler do it?

The Scottish horse already became an icon last year with its win here at the Grand National.

However, it's very rare there are back-to-back winners.

The last horse to do so was Tiger Roll.
