West Indies vs England: Chris Gayle recalled for first two one-day internationals in Caribbean ahead of 2019 World Cup

The 39-year-old has missed the last two series for his country but has been named in the squad along with uncapped Nicholas Pooran

Chris Gayle has been called up for the first two one-day internationals against England in the Caribbean.

The 39-year-old batter has been capped 284 times by the West Indies and has amassed 9,727 runs since making his debut in 1999.

Gayle missed the last two series for the side but is back ahead of the World Cup, which takes place in England this summer.

Wicketkeeper/batsman Nicholas Pooran has also been called up to the West Indies squad for the first time.

Marlon Samuels misses out, though, as he is receiving treatment for a knee injury.

West Indies chairman of selectors said: “We welcome the return of Chris Gayle who missed the last two series and Ashley Nurse from injury.

“We are pleased to introduce Nicholas Pooran to the ODI squad for the first time. He is clearly a young player with undoubted talent and we believe he can add value to our middle order.

“Shannon Gabriel remains very much in our World Cup plans but with a heavy workload expected in the Test series he will be considered for selection later in the ODI series.”

The first ODI takes place at the Kensington Oval on February 20 and is the start of a five match series, all of which will be live on talkSPORT 2.

West Indies squad: Fabian Allen, Devendra Bishoo, Darren Bravo, Chris Gayle, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder (Capt), Shai Hope, Evin Lewis, Ashley Nurse, Keemo Paul, Nicholas Pooran, Rovman Powell, Kemar Roach, Oshane Thomas.

Every match of the tour of the West Indies will be LIVE on talkSPORT 2 and you can catch the action by clicking here for the live commentary stream. You can also listen through the talkSPORT App, on DAB Digital Radio or on MW 1053 or 1089.
