How are England getting on at the Commonwealth Games? All the latest from the Gold Coast as Nick Miller claims first Gold Medal
Nick Miller claimed Team England's first Gold Medal of the Gold Coast 2018 Games in the Men's Hammer Throw Final.
Launching the Hammer an incredible 80.26 metres, Miller claimed both the Commonwealth Games Record, British record and even secured a personal best.
Miller said: "It is the result of a lot of hard work between me and my coach. It has all paid off in the end. It is just incredible to win the gold; it is such a special moment for me as my family are in the crowd; they will be more pleased that I threw over 80m.
"To be honest, I thought I could throw 80m; it is the distance every hammer thrower wants to make. The best part is that I beat my coach. We joked for years that I’d throw over his best (80.14m) and when 80.26m came up, it was one up on him."
Elsewhere, Courtney Tulloch and Georgia-Mae Fenton also won Gold for England in the gymnastics arena of the day in the men’s rings and women’s uneven bars.
Tulloch and Nile Wilson, who were part of the victorious men’s gymnastics team on the first outing at the Gold Coast, were favourites coming into the event, and performed superbly on the rings with respective scores of 14.833 and 14.4.
Wilson claimed a Silver medal for his efforts, ensuring it was a perfect outing for Team England.
Also, Emily Godley shocked favourite Games record-holder and reigning champion Marie-Eve Beauchemin-Nadeau of Canada in the 75kg weightlifting.
Godley lifted an incredible 126kg in the Clean and Jerk, making her the only competitor to complete a lift on every single attempt.
And finally, Soibhan-Marie O'Connor clainmed Gold in the women's 200m individual medley to retain her title.
Recording a stunning time of 2:09:80, O’Connor smashed nearest competitor Sarah Darcel of Canada, by almost two seconds.
Siobhan told the BBC, following her race: "The time wasn't my best but it was such an amazing feeling. I have really struggled for last 18 months, so wanted to come here, retain title and build my confidence.
"It's hard to come here and beat the Aussies on their own soil, but I am really pleased with the result."
