Exclusive – Ohuruogu thrilled to take British 400m record

Christine Ohuruogu was delighted to break the British 400m record

Christine Ohuruogu has told talkSPORT of her delight at becoming Britain's fastest ever 400m runner with her World Championship-winning run.

Ohuruogu produced a thrilling late surge to beat Amantle Montsho in a photo finish at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow on Monday, breaking Kathy Cook's long-standing national record in the process.

The 29-year-old, who won gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and silver in London last year, is the first British woman to clinch two world titles, but she admits taking Cook's record means more.

Speaking on the Sports Breakfast on Tuesday, she said: "It was what we were working for all season.

"It was really good to come away with an Olympic medal last season but I thought, if I was to keep going, I needed to aim for something really high and the record was that.

"I knew after last year I had a really good platform to work from. I knew exactly what I needed to do and I knew I could turn the heat up a little a bit more.

"This one is special because it is a record. For me, it was more the record I was after than the win.

"I really wanted to come away with the record and I knew this was the championship I had to strike because I had everything going for me. I’m really happy to have got it."
