England battle back in first Ashes Test

Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook both hit centuries as England battled back in the first Ashes Test at the Gabba.

Starting the day on 19-0 the pair put on a opening wicket stand of 188 in a record performance at Brisbane.

England batted the whole of the fourth day for the loss of only one wicket, finishing the day on 309-1, a lead of 88.

The game had looked to be swinging Australia's way as they posted 481 all out in their first innings but England's reply must add encouragement to Andy Flower and the whole of the Barmy Army.

Strauss was the only man out for 110 with Jonathan Trott replacing him, who finished on 54 at stumps.
