Anderson hails England effort after fine start to second Test

James Anderson declared the first day of the second Test against Australia as one of the most satisfying in his career.

Pace man Anderson took 4-51 including the wicket of captain Ricky Ponting for a golden duck as the Aussies were skittled out for 245.

England openers Alastair Cook and Andrew Strauss were still standing at stumps and Anderson believes England have an excellent chance of going 1-0 up in the series.

He said: “It was a hugely satisfying day for everyone, to come to a ground which is notoriously flat with big first-innings scores, it was a great effort from the whole team to keep them to such a low score.

“We haven't had any worries about taking 20 wickets out here. We know each others' jobs and we are confident of taking 20 wickets.

“First things first, we have to build our innings up, there will probably be a tricky period in the morning when the ball is new.

“But if we can get a good partnership together then we can do what we did in Brisbane.”

Anderson added England had done their homework on the Adelaide Oval wicket in the warm-up match against Australia A.

The Lancashire man said: “We knew there might be something in the pitch because there were tinges of green there and we knew if we bent our backs there might be something for us.

“Also in the warm-up game we knew there was something in the pitch, so it was a good toss to lose.”
