Dowsett’s late show steals time trial gold medal

England's Alex Dowsett produced the goods late on to win a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games men's cycling time trial.
The 25-year-old eventually beat Rohan Dennis by 9.30 seconds after a strong last section showing, though he had earlier been 5.92 behind the Australian at the middle section of the 38.4km course.
Wales' Geraint Thomas won bronze, 14.04 behind Dowsett.
The Essex-born rider missed out on Tour de France selection for his Movistar team through illness this year but this win will surely make up for some of that pain.
At the first time check he led New Zealand's Jesse Sergent by three seconds and was seven seconds ahead of Dennis through the 17.1km mark with Thomas in bronze position.
But less than 10km later and Dowsett had let his advantage slip as he fell to third behind the Australia, who boasted a four second lead over Thomas and the Englishman.
Thomas was the first to cross the finish line and waited nervously to see how his rivals would do, with both Dennis and Dowsett eventually beating him.
Defending champion David Millar was out of contention early on in the race and eventually ended up way down the field, finishing in eighth.
Elsewhere, England's Emma Poley was beaten to gold in the women's version of the race by New Zealand's Linda Villumsen.
The 31-year-old was leading with 6km left of the course but Villumsen refused to be beaten and eventually by 6.03, as Australia's Katrin Garfoot took bronze.
