European Champions Cup results: Leicester beat Munster and Toulouse thrash Zebre

European Champions Cup results

Exeter beat 14-man Bordeaux in the early kick-off and here's what happened in the other European encounters.

Leicester 18-16 Munster
Owen Williams gave Leicester a European Champions Cup lifeline by kicking six penalties to floor Irish heavyweights Munster in dramatic fashion at Welford Road.

The Welshman's winning 52-metre strike came a minute from time as Leicester triumphed 18-16 just a week after shipping 38 points against the same opponents.

Munster hooker Niall Scannell's 75th-minute try, which fly-half Tyler Bleyendaal converted, looked to have thwarted Leicester, but Williams struck after visiting flanker CJ Stander was penalised.

It meant that Leicester ended Munster's 100 per cent Pool One record heading into the final two rounds of group fixtures next month.

Leicester, European champions in 2001 and 2002, still have it all to do in their quest for a last-eight place, but fly-half Williams' 100 per cent kicking accuracy relieved pressure on both the Tigers squad and rugby director Richard Cockerill as the home side prevailed.

Toulouse 54-15 Zebre
Toby Flood scored a try and kicked 14 points as Toulouse overpowered European Champions Cup opponents Zebre 54-15 and romped to their second win in Pool Two.

Italian side Zebre made a flying start when hooker Tommaso Apice's third-minute try was converted by Carlo Canna, but the Frenchmen hit back with six first-half tries to secure their bonus point and effectively wrap up the contest before the interval.

Number eight Gillian Galan, Samoan wing Paul Perez, full-back Yohan Huget, centre Arthur Bonneval, fly-half Flood and South African prop Gurthro Steenkamp all went over, while Zebre's only riposte in the first period came via a Canna penalty.

Connacht 20-18 Wasps

Jack Carty showed nerves of steel to convert Naulia Dawai's injury-time try and steer Connacht to a terrific 20-18 European Champions Cup win over Wasps at the Sportsground.

The Irish province's Galway ground rocked to its foundations as Carty sent over the decisive conversion from far out on the right, a kick which means Wasps, Toulouse and Connacht are now tied on 13 points each at the top of Pool Two.

Dai Young's side, who were 32-17 winners at home last week, were on course for a double when they won a scrum against the head and Dan Robson fed Josh Barrett for a 72nd minute try.

That came after two Jimmy Gopperth penalties which had erased Connacht's 13-7 half-time lead, the hosts ending the first half with a Danie Poolman try from fly-half Carty's cross-field kick.

But the vast majority of the 8,090 crowd were delighted with Connacht's late sprint finish, a last-gasp maul seeing Fijian newcomer Dawai plunge over on his debut. It was left to Carty to decide the outcome and the 24-year-old nailed the difficult kick before being enveloped by his team-mates.

Leinster 60-13 Northampton

Leinster stormed to a 60-13 bonus point European Champions Cup victory over Northampton after a nine-try annihilation at the Aviva Stadium.

Saints' heaviest ever European defeat - eclipsing their 34-point losing margin against Castres in October - saw Leinster make it back-to-back wins over the English side and take a six-point lead at the top of Pool 4.

It was an improved first half showing from Saints, who led 13-5 thanks to Ken Pisi's interception try, but the hosts took an iron grip on proceedings with Adam Byrne's brace and efforts from Luke McGrath and Sean O'Brien.

O'Brien's seven-pointer on the stroke of half-time secured the bonus point at 29-13 and there was no let-up in the second half as tries from Tadhg Furlong, man-of-the-match Sean Cronin, captain Isa Nacewa (two), who crossed the 600-point mark in his Leinster career, and replacement Rory O'Loughlin completed the rout.
