European Champions Cup round-up: Bath edge past Leinster while Leicester blow away Treviso

England fly-half George Ford kicked a 76th minute penalty to give Bath a narrow 19-16 win over Leinster at the Recreation Ground.

Ford and Ireland counterpart Johnny Sexton kept trading penalties as the sides were level at 9-9 after 55 minutes.

Both teams then took it in turns to score a try each, with first Bath being awarded a penalty try after a powerful drive from the pack before Leinster evened the scoreboard through Josh van der Flier.

However, it was Ford and Bath who had the last penalty and nicked it right at the death to edge the Pool Five encounter.

Full-back Telusa Veainu scored twice as Leicester earned a convincing bonus point 36-3 victory over Champions Cup Pool Four strugglers Treviso.

The Tongan also had a try harshly ruled out by the TMO but prior to that he set up winger Peter Betham to cross over the whitewash.

The other tries came through replacement hooker Greg Bateman and a penalty try while Tommy Bell and Seremaia Bai kicked nine and two points respectively.

In Pool Two, Exeter defeated Bordeaux 34-19 thanks to man of the match Olly Woodburn crossing the whitewash twice.

Prop Moray Low and centre Ian Whitton also crossed to give the hosts a try-scoring bonus point, while England international Henry Slade was impeccable from the tee as he kicked 14 points in the last of the Saturday games.

Slade proved the decisive difference between the scores as Bordeaux ran in three tries of their own, through Nans Ducuing, Julien Rey and Yann Lesgourgues at Sandy Park.

Northampton beat Glasgow 26-15 at Scotstoun in Pool Three thanks to a brace of tries from winger Ahsee Tuala.

Centre George Pisi got the visitors’ first score of the game before Tuala added a further two while Stephen Myler added 11 points of his own from the tee.

Glasgow, who are yet to hit the heights of last season, hit back as Peter Horne and Josh Strauss crossed the whitewash with but Finn Russell was not as formidable as his opposite number with the boot, only adding a penalty and a conversion.

In the other game in Pool Three Llanelli Scarlets succumbed 29-12 to Racing Metro after a blistering first-half display from the French side.

The visitors raced into a 26-0 lead at half time after Maxime Machenaud, Joe Rokococo, Chris Masoe and Marc Andreu all crossed to secure a well-deserved bonus point.

The Scarlets staged a mini-comeback in the second half with 12 unanswered points after tries from Aled Thomas and Lewis Rawlins but it was not enough for the Welsh side.

Toulouse beat Oyannax 24-18 in the game in Pool One but fell one try short of picking up a vital bonus point in this all-French fixture.

The home side ran in tries through wingers Timoci Matanavou and Maxime Medard with centre Gael Fickou adding the third as Luke McAlister added nine with the boot.

Oyannax kept in touch with their hosts through Vincent Martin and Fabien Cibray tries but they were unable to overhaul Toulouse in the encounter at the Stade Ernest Wallon.
