World number one Iga Swiatek showed skills that Lionel Messi would be proud of at Wimbledon

Iga Swiatek may be the top woman in tennis right now but she could also give Lionel Messi a run for his money.

But while she'll be hoping that she can win her first title in SW19 and her fifth grand slam in total, the 22-year-old might just give another insight into her footballing ability.

Back in 2021, Swiatek was in action when her serve was called as a fault, leading her opponent to play the ball back to her.

Approaching her with pace, the Polish star pulled off a stunning half-volley flick to effortlessly kick the ball off the court and into the hands of the ball kid who was standing nearby.

As well as prompting applause from the crowd at Wimbledon, it also prompted the BBC commentator to comment.

"Nice," before adding "Wow, very topical at this time of year with the Euros."

Such is Swiatek's level of talent, she didn't even bat an eyelid after her impressive trick, suggesting that it was by no means a fluke.

Of course Messi is regarded as one of the greatest players ever to play football and while his career may be coming into its final few years, his legacy will continue for decades to come.

Given Swiatek's huge success with five grand slams and 14 titles already secured at the age of 22, she'll be hoping that she can build a similar level of dominance in her sport with the hope of becoming one of the greatest female tennis stars of all-time.
