Wimbledon viewers were left heartbroken for a ball boy who missed out on a handshake from the Princess of Wales.

Carlos Alcaraz had just downed Novak Djokovic in an epic men’s singles final, downing the Grand Slam record holder in a near five-hour five-set match.

Both of the Spanish and Serbian duo charmed the crowd with their interviews after the event, but that was not before the trophies were handed out.

Doing the honours was Kate Middleton, patron of the Lawn Tennis Association, and a keen tennis player.

Present at SW19 for much of the London tournament, the royal was likely tired of shaking hands, and unfortunately missed out one as she walked out on Centre Court.

Greeting nearly all of the ball kids who lined her entrance to the playing surface, she missed the first one, and he appeared a little gutted.

Responding to the moment, one Twitter user wrote: “Kate Middleton just totally blanked the first ball boy, and shook hands with all the others as she walked out for the presentation, poor fella!”

Another added: “A shame for the ball boy Kate missed, hilarious walk in.”

One said: "Kate came on court speaking to the ball boys and girl. But didn’t she miss out the first ball boy? How do you think he feels about that?"

A fourth replied: "It was very strange, not to mention unfortunate and embarrassing for the poor lad."

The Princess of Wales, who was joined in the Royal Box by husband Prince William as well as children Prince George and Princess Charlotte, was then on hand to hand the trophy over to Alcaraz.

The 20-year-old then told the crowd: "It's something that I will never forget, that's for sure. It's great for the new generation, as well, I think to see me beating him and making them think that they are capable to do it, as well. It's great for me and I think for the young players, as well."
