Wimbledon round-up: Nadal moves into last 16 as Williams suffers shock defeat

Rafael Nadal survived a third successive first set loss to come back and beat Mikhail Kukushkin to reach Wimbledon's last 16.

The world number one has struggled at the beginning of matches this year but eventually he came through 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 under the Centre Court roof.

Despite bosting only three wins on grass and a solitary victory over a top-10 opponent, Kukushkin hit 17 searing winners and then sneaked the tie break to hint at an upset.

But the Spaniard was not about to be shocked for a third successive Wimbledon, picking up the pace and when the Kazakh's first-serve slipped away, the writing was on the wall.

Nadal seized on a series of poor second serves to level the match and from there it was a masterclass as he set up a last 16 clash with Nick Kyrgios.

The Australian teenager continued his fairytale run at Wimbledon battling to 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 victory over Jiri Vesely.

Meanwhile, in the women's draw there was a huge shock as number one seed Serena Williams lost to France's Alize Cornet 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

It marks the first time since 2005 that the American has been knocked out and Cornet's second victory over the world number one this year.

There was no such shock for another former champion, Maria Sharapova who powered her way past Alison Riske 6-3, 6-0.

The Russian will now face Heather Watson's second round conqueror Angelique Kerber in the last 16 after the German beat Kirsten Flipkens 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Rain wreaked havoc on the day's play but Roger Federer did manage to get out on Centre Court after Nadal and the seven-time champion eased to a 6-3, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Santiago Giraldo.

The Swiss star will face Tommy Robredo in the fourth round on Monday after the Spaniard overcame Jerzy Janowicz in a marathon five set match, 2-6, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, 3-6.
