Wimbledon round-up: Nadal and Sharapova suffer shock exits

The top seeds continue to tumble at Wimbledon as both Rafa Nadal and Maria Sharapova suffered shock defeats in the fourth round.

World No.1 Nadal continued his miserable run of surprise exits in SW19 and was stunned by 19-year-old wildcard Nick Kyrgios.

The Australian youngster produced one of the greatest shocks in the tournament's history by defeating the Spaniard in four sets on Centre Court, winning 7-6 (7/5) 5-7 7-6 (7/5) 6-3.

Kyrgios arrived at Wimbledon ranked 144th in the world, and will now leave having reached at least number 65, while three-time champion John McEnroe believes he could emulate Boris Becker by winning the title in his teens.

Nadal's loss was not the only shock of the day on Centre Court as Maria Sharapova was knocked out in three sets after an epic battle with the fearless Angelique Kerber.

The German ended Sharapova’s dreams of a second Wimbledon crown, ten years after winning her only title, coming through a tense final set to win 7-6 (7/4) 4-6 6-4.

Kerber joins Serena Williams, Li Na and Agnieszka Radwanska among the top names to exit before the later stages

Meanwhile, Swiss pair Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka will meet in the quarter-finals after the seven-time champion beat Tommy Robredo in straight sets.

The grass master was rarely troubled in a commanding performance, winning 6-1 6-4 6-4, while his compatriot Wawrinka beat Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 7-6 7-6 6-3.

Elsewhere, Serena Williams said she was ''heartbroken'' after pulling out the women’s doubles through illness, having to retire midway through her and sister Venus’ match on Court One.
