Breathtaking Stan Wawrinka stuns Novak Djokovic to secure French Open title

Stan Wawrinka denied world number one Novak Djokovic the career Grand Slam with a stunning 4-6 6-4 6-3 6-4 victory in the French Open final at Roland Garros.

The Swiss number two had already dumped out compatriot Roger Federer and home favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the previous rounds, and shocked the world’s undisputed best player with some astonishing hitting in Paris.

Djokovic won a straightforward first set with a single break of serve, but Wawrinka hit back in the second by breaking the Serb in the final game after squandering several opportunities throughout the set.

Wawrinka’s tail was up and, with Djokovic showing signs of fatigue after a two-day marathon with Andy Murray in his semi-final, was completely outscoring his opponent in the winners department.

After securing the third set 6-3, the final set ebbed and flowed with both players exchanging early breaks. Wawrinka then saved three break points on his serve, before breaking Djokovic himself almost immediately with a series of breathtaking backhand passes.

Wawrinka held his nerve to serve out for the Championship, duly adding the title to the Australian Open he won in 2014. Meanwhile, Djokovic will have to wait another year in his bid to become only the eighth man in the game’s history to complete the full set of Grand Slams.
