Wimbledon 2018: Why is two-time champion Andy Murray not playing this year?

The former world number one made his competitive return at Queens which ended in a three-set defeat to Nick Kyrgios

Andy Murray has pulled out of Wimbledon on the eve of the tournament

The two-time champion was expected to play at the All-England club having been drawn against Frenchman Benoit Paire in the first round, but had a last minute change of heart.

Why has Andy Murray pulled out of Wimbledon?

Murray has been suffering from a hip injury which has dogged him over the last 15 months.

He pulled out of the Australian Open in January to undergo hip surgery in Australia and he is still recovering.

Murray made his competitive return at Queens last week which ended in a three-set defeat to Nick Kyrgios.

He also played at Eastbourne, where last week he thumped Stan Wawrinka for his first win in almost a year before losing to his successor as British number one, Kyle Edmund.

The Scot has cited the best-of-five format as too risky at this stage of his comeback.

When did Murray make the announcement?

Murray announced that he was pulling out on Sunday, July 1 – just a day before the championships.

He said "It is with a heavy heart that I'm announcing that I'll be withdrawing from Wimbledon this year.

"We've decided that playing best-of-five-set matches might be a bit too soon in the recovery process.

"I will start practising on the hard courts from tomorrow and continuing with my rehab and recovery and I'm looking forward to the US hard-court season."

When will Murray make his grand slam comeback?

The fourth and final slam of the year is the US Open and Murray will be hopeful of playing at Flushing Meadows.

The Scot, who won the tournament in 2012, has almost two months to work on his fitness before it begins.
