talkSPORT Transfer Spotlight: Arsenal target Park Chu-young – facts, stats and video

As Arsenal look set to snap up Monaco forward Park Chu-young, here's what Gooners should know about the South Korea captain…

Name: Park Chu-young

Date of birth: 10 July 1985 (26 years old)

Birthplace: Daegu, South Korea

Position: Forward

Club: Monaco

International appearances: 51 (17 goals)

Honours: K-League Cup (2006 with FC Seoul) Coupe de France (2010 with Monaco)

WHAT'S THE LATEST NEWS?

French side Lille were set to sign Park from Monaco, but when Lille sent a car to pick the player up for his medical, they were shocked to discover he'd already left to visit Arsenal. Word is that a deal with the Gunners is imminent, for a bargain £2.5m. The low price is due to Monaco's relegation to Ligue 2 and the question of whether Park will have to return to South Korea for his national service in 2013. Every able-bodied South Korean must spend two years in the armed forces before they are 28 years old and it looks unlikely that Park will be excused. If he is excused, the price Arsenal pay will eventually rise.

DID YOU KNOW?

1) Park enjoyed the finest of his three seasons at Monaco last year with 12 goals in 33 league games.

2) He was voted South Korea's most popular player in 2005 and 2006 and won the South Korean K-League's Player of the Year gong in 2008.

3) He played with Bolton's Lee Chung-yong at FC Seoul for two years, where he scored 23 goals in 69 games.

4) In April 2009, Roy Hodgson expressed an interest in bringing him to Fulham,  as did Liverpool in June this year, but a deal didn't materialise.

5) Despite standing out for Monaco last season, the French club were sent crashing into Ligue 2, the first time Park has tasted relegation in his career.

HE SAYS:

"I had to make a decision between Arsenal and Lille. And the decision had to be what I want and won't regret."

THEY SAY:

"He [Park] will play many games in the EPL, he will be able to grow into a better player. It might be helpful for the national team." Cho Kwang Rae, the South Korean national team manager.
