England Watch: Fabio’s Fab Five, starring Lampard, Gerrard and Defoe

With so many games over the festive and New Year periods, England manager Fabio Capello has had plenty to think about, but who should he be looking at? Each week, talkSPORT takes a look at how the players fighting for a place on the plane to Poland and Ukraine are getting on, including established stars and emerging talent.

Gary Cahill
He may have scored his last goal for Bolton in the Trotters' 2-1 win at Everton and the defender has impressed in his centre-back role throughout the season in a struggling side. Cahill is being eyed by the country's top clubs, with Chelsea in negotiations to take him to Stamford Bridge, though Man United and Tottenham are keeping an eye on the talks. In any case, a transfer to one of the big boys will further enhance his case for inclusion in Capello's finals squad.

Jermain Defoe
Despite playing a bit-part role in Spurs' season, the striker has managed to score seven times in the Premier League so far. A well taken goal against West Brom in a crucial 1-0 win brought Tottenham to within three points of second-placed Man United and six behind leaders Man City with a game in hand. Give him an opportunity and he will score, Mr Capello.

Lee Cattermole
Sunderland have been rejuvenated since the arrival of manager Martin O'Neill at the start of December 2011 and wins against Man City and Wigan have seen the club's captain, Lee Cattermole perform brilliantly. After beating table toppers City, Cattermole's boss said: “I thought the team’s performance was epitomised by the captain’s.”

Frank Lampard
The 33-year-old continues to pop up with vital goals for his club, demonstrating his worth to club and country. Against Wolves on Monday night, Lampard again rescued his side, scoring the winning goal in a 2-1 victory. People write him off, but he is proving that he still has something to offer the England camp.

Steven Gerrard
He's back from injury and that's good news for Liverpool and even better news for England as the talismanic midfielder is able to inspire others around him. The Reds captain just goes from strength to strength and scored against Newcastle on New Year's Eve in only his second appearance back from his spell on the sidelines.
