NEED TO KNOW
A goal hungry forward full of energy, trickery and pace, Adam Campbell starred for Newcastle's youth and reserve teams last season, and has been compared to players as brilliant and diverse as Paul Gascoigne and Michael Owen (no pressure then, lad!). Last season, his goals fired Newcastle into the FA Youth Cup quarter-finals while he recently made an impressive senior debut in a friendly against Cardiff. It was last weekend, though, in front of Alan Pardew, Peter Beardsley and Les Ferdinand that Campbell staked a real claim for first-team inclusion with a hat-trick in a thrilling 6-4 U21 victory over Spurs.
FIVE FACTS
1) Campbell was named most valuable player at the prestigious Manchester United Premier Cup World Finals in 2010, a global youth football tournament involving some of the world's biggest clubs. Players from previous winners have included Andres Iniesta and Carlos Tevez.
2) It took the young forward just four-and-a-half minutes to find the back of the net in his England U17 debut against Portugal, a 2-1 victory for the Three Lions in February 2012.
3) After watching Campbell steal the show at the weekend, former Newcastle striker Les Ferdinand revealed: “I spoke to Peter [Beardsley] about him at the end and we talked about what a prospect he is. We talked about what a good attitude he had.”
4) At just 5ft 6in, it's easy to see why the youngster has been compared in style to Michael Owen. Born in North Shields, he is a boyhood Newcastle fan and picks out Cheick Tiote as his favourite player.
5) Campbell couldn't hide his delight after making a first team debut against Cardiff, in a friendly earlier this month: “I’ve lived my dream now. I’m very happy. I prefer playing down the middle off a big man, but to be honest I could’ve played centre-half or in goal, it wouldn’t have mattered to me... it was a proud moment – I’ve dreamt of it all my life.”
HE SAYS
"The gaffer [Pardew] has been absolutely brilliant with me. He keeps saying ‘hello’ and making us feel comfortable around him. I couldn’t really ask for a better mentor." - August 2012
THEY SAY
"If he continues the way he is going he will only get better." - Les Ferdinand, August 2012
