Picture for Wenger: How Jan Vertonghen would look as Emmanuel Petit

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has revealed that he turned down the chance to sign for the Lilywhites' north London rivals Arsenal, after Arsene Wenger told him he would play as a midfielder in the Emmanuel Petit-mould. "[Arsenal's interest] was concrete," said the Belgian. "But they wanted me to be a controller in midfield, an Emmanuel Petit-type."

It's another case of what could have been for Arsenal and their beleaguered French gaffer. What next? Perhaps Wenger will attempt to persuade Pepe Reina to play Freddie Ljungberg's role, complete with red mohawk.
