Why Spurs, Arsenal and Liverpool should be chasing this Swansea transfer target

Having lured Michu from Spain in the summer – a steal at £2m – Swansea manager Michael Laudrup is rumoured to be returning to La Liga to pick up more quality on the cheap. They missed out on Michu, so Spurs, Arsenal and Liverpool may want to pay attention to talkSPORT's Transfer Spotlight on midfielder Jose Canas.

Name: Jose Canas
Date of birth: 27 May 1987
Born: Cadiz, Spain
Club: Real Betis
Position: Midfield

What's the latest?
What looked to be a done deal for the Swans at the start of the year, now appears to be faltering as cash-strapped Betis demand more money for 25-year-old Jose Canas, whose contract expires in June. Apparently the midfielder has told Swansea he is willing to accept a lower salary than the Welsh club are offering in a bid to free up some funds for a larger fee.

Did you know?
1) A quick midfielder with excellent ball control, Canas is a very sharp defensive midfielder. His range of passing is excellent and brings both wingers and central attackers into play, while remaining very disciplined in his role in front of the back line.

2) He made his debut for the Betis first team in the 2008/09 season having come through the academy, but sadly for him, Betis were relegated.

3) Since returning to La Liga, Canas he has had a more prominent role for Betis after appearing from the bench most of the time in the second tier and is now the club's vice-captain.

4) In November, a number of fans turned up to Betis' training ground to vent their frustration at the players following the club's 5-1 mauling by rivals Sevilla. Canas, who was substituted after 28 minutes during the derby, stormed off down the tunnel and later apologised to fans.

5) With Betis fifth in La Liga, level on points with fourth-placed Malaga and just five points behind current champions Real, there is a suggestion in Spain that the club will put their financial woes to one side and keep the influential midfielder to focus on nabbing a European spot.

What is being said?
He says:

“A change in the 28th minute does not sit well with anyone, least of all me, who represents an entity such as Betis, who I respect with all my heart.”
- Canas explains that no player likes to be taken off early after his substitution in the Seville derby

They say:
“I have 100 per cent security that he will not continue beyond June 30. I know he is committed to the club and his team-mates, he will give 100 per cent whilst he is here.”
- Betis manager Pepe Mel

Does your club need a player like Canas? More importantly, who looks more like Sideshow Bob - David Luiz or Jose Canas?
