Liverpool let this player go but spent £15m on Joe Allen – big mistake?

While Joe Allen was having a torrid time in Liverpool's 3-1 defeat to struggling Southampton, a midfielder who barely got a look in at Anfield - and was played out of position when he did - was starring for one of Europe's most exciting teams, scoring twice and setting up another in a 5-1 victory.
That man is Nuri Sahin, who showed his talent in a thumping Bundlesiga win for Champions League quarter-finalists Borussia Dortmund at the weekend.
Last week, Sahin at being played out of position at Liverpool earlier this season, saying, "Brendan Rodgers wanted to play me as a 10, but I do not play behind the forwards."
Loan signing Sahin was shipped out of Anfield in January, as Rodgers favoured £15m man Joe Allen in the deeper midfield position, but the Welshman has so far added his name to the list of underwhelming big money British buys that have plagued Liverpool in recent years.
Allen - who looked out of sorts in Liverpool's poor performance at Southampton, before being subbed at half-time - certainly hasn't experienced 80,000 fans singing his name this season, as Sahin had at the weekend…
