Exclusive – Jones: ‘Capello doesn’t look down on the Championship’

Dave Jones has told talkSPORT that he wouldn't be surprised to see in-form striker Jay Bothroyd in the England squad.

Speaking to the Hawksbee and Jacobs show the former Southampton boss praised the Championship player of the month and warned critics: Bothroyd is good enough for England.

He said: "He’s been on fire, he can’t get his head through the two doors at the moment, we’re having to open a third one for him. I’m kidding, but he really deserves it [the player of the month award] and when I said it people thought I was joking, but Fabio has said that he doesn’t look down on this division.

"He [Capello] should get a look at this division because there’s a lot of players in it and Jay’s one of them, I was serious when I said it. If you’re looking for a different type of centre forward, he’s not just the big lump down the middle, you know he can drift, he can come short and he’s got great ability.

"He’s come on leaps and bounds since he’s been here, he seems to have found his football club, because he’d had quite a few before and for such a young player, eight or nine clubs is a lot of clubs to have had.

"He’s certainly earned the right to be looked at and hopefully get an opportunity to see whether he can make that big step up into international level."
