What is the Pitch Black Match at Royal Rumble 2023 and why are Mountain Dew sponsoring it? Bray Wyatt set for in-ring WWE comeback against LA Knight

Bray Wyatt will finally make his WWE PPV return against LA Knight in the first-ever Pitch Black Match at the 2023 Royal Rumble.

The Eater of Worlds made his return at Extreme Rules in October but hasn't wrestled a single TV or premium live event match since.

Wyatt, whose last major match came at WrestleMania 37 in April 2021, has only competed in non-televised live events so far in his second run with the company.

And WWE are attempting to pull out all the stops for his return with the wacky and mysterious Pitch Black Match being introduced.

Pitch Black Match: What is it?

Details about the match are scarce, with WWE keeping their cards close to their chests about what will be invovled.

According to a report from , there will be 'neon' elements introduced in the bout.

The report adds that WWE were doing run throughs regarding the use of neon at the Rumble this week.

But it remains to be seen whether it'll be akin to the red lights Wyatt competed against Seth Rollins under at Hell in the Cell 2019.

The match gets its name from energy drink sponsors Mountain Dew, who re-released their Pitch Black flavour earlier this month.

Pitch Black Match: What has been said?

Speaking on Friday Night SmackDown at the start of the month, commentator Michael Cole said: "It’s unique, it’s never been seen before. We don’t know quite what to expect.

"All we know is there are no rules, anything goes, pinfall or submission.

"Bray Wyatt has tried quite desperately to avoid this descent into darkness but he’s failing."

Royal Rumble 2023: Date and start time

The  will take place on Saturday, January 28 and is being held at The Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, in America.

The card will begin from 1am UK time and continue into the early hours of Sunday morning.

There will be a pre-show on for two hours first from 11pm which will be shown for FREE on WWE’s YouTube channel.
