Weekend news round up – NXT star released, new Dusty tag teams and latest on WWE purchasing TNA

Hugo Knox has left WWE

For those who were looking forward to seeing Hugo Knox transport his sporting talents from the football pitch to the squared circle will be disappointed today, after the British star parted ways with WWE over the weekend.

Former Port Vale goalkeeper and the real-life Stuart Tomlinson had apparently got frustrated with his role in NXT and felt he wasn’t getting ample opportunities within the company. Therefore it was mutually agreed between him and WWE to terminate his contract.

The 31-year old only once appeared on WWE TV, briefly teaming with Tucker Knight to job to the Vaudevillians in November 2016. However, he had played a major role in NXT’s most recent UK tour and even teamed with then NXT Champion Finn Bàlor over the Download Festival weekend in June - where he spoke to .

That appearance however proved to be a NXT swansong for Knox and despite being highly regarded - especially by William Regal who sung his praises earlier in the year - it remains to be seen if the former shot-stopper will now continue to pursue his wrestling career on the independent circuit.

As for the current NXT roster, in an update to the story we posted on Friday, six further teams have been added to the annual Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic that begins on this week’s tapings.

In addition to Hideo Itami & Kota Ibushi, Tino Sabbatelli & Riddick Moss, Bobby Roode & Tye Dillinger, Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa, Andrade "Cien" Almas & Cedric Alexander and current NXT Tag Team Champions The Revival, these pairings will also compete in the tournament.

No Way Jose & Rich Swann

HoHo Lun & Bin Wang

The Authors of Pain

Niko Bogojevic & Tucker Knight

TM-61

The Bollywood Boyz

Making that now eleven announced teams for the tournament, with wwe.com reporting another five are to be added before it kicks-off on Wednesday and runs for the next seven weeks.

There remain conflicting reports regarding WWE’s interest in purchasing TNA, with current owner Dixie Carter said to have found funds to keep the promotion going until the end of the year. Forbes is still claiming that WWE are still very much involved in purchase talks but are comfortable in letting the situation play out.

Last night’s Bound For Glory show did go ahead despite some concerns of it’s status and that of this week's TV tapings. However, no formal bid for the company has been made by WWE or any other interested party.
