WWE announce the United Kingdom Championship
WWE have made their biggest ever foray into the UK wrestling scene, with the announcement of the WWE United Kingdom Championship.
WWE Executive Vice President of Talent, Live Events & Creative, Paul “Triple H®” Levesque jetted into London’s O2 Arena on Thursday alongside William Regal and #GP100 guest Finn Bálor to make the announcement, that will see sixteen UK wrestlers compete for the gold in a two night exclusive event in Blackpool on January 14 and 15.
"Our passionate U.K. fans deserve to have their own Champion,” said Triple H to a packed-out conference room. “The tournament is the next step in our ongoing strategy to create localized content for our global WWE Network, develop another brand that engages our passionate fans, and add a new dimension to our on-going storylines.”
This unprecedented event - that comes complete with a brand new and highly impressive looking belt - will feature a single-elimination tournament and showcase competitors from all four Home Nations and Ireland including names such as Trent Seven, Pete Dunne, Tyler Bate, Wolfgang, Tyson T-Bone, Tucker, Jordan Devlin, Roy Johnson and Tiger Ali.
To add further UK flavour to the event The WWE United Kingdom Championship Tournament will be called by lead announcer Michael Cole and he will be joined by Nigel McGuiness in a move that the mainstay of the UK independent scene called ‘a realisation’ of a dream.
