SmackDown Live results 8/7 – Randy’s revenge ruined by Rusev

Rusev ambushes Randy Orton on SmackDown Live

He may not have the WWE Title round his waist but Randy Orton got some revenge on Jinder Mahal last night on SmackDown Live.

The pair who have been embroiled in the blue brand’s top storyline in recent months, met once again in the evenings main event and it was Orton who finally bested the WWE Champion. One RKO out of nowhere was enough to see off Mahal - who will battle Shinsuke Nakamura at SummerSlam later this month - but Randy’s celebrations were short-lived. His exit up the ramp cut-short by the boot of his pay-per-view opponent Rusev, laying out the Viper at the top of the entranceway as the show went off air.

Jinder wasn’t the only champion pinned on this week’s SmackDown. The same fate befell SmackDown Women’s champion Naomi as Carmella beat her thanks to an assist from a returning James Ellsworth. Miss Money In Bank later warned Natayla ahead of her title match against the champion at SummerSlam to watch out because she’s ready to cash-in on her own guaranteed title bout.

The United States Championship is also set to defended SummerSlam as AJ Styles puts his gold on the line against Kevin Owens with Shane McMahon as guest referee. The SmackDown commissioner was on hand this week to explain to both men his impartiality, only for Owens to point out the flaws in Shane O’Mac’s claims. Citing footage of his past misdemeanors as a guest ref and his WrestleMania feud with Style as examples of why he may not call the match down the middle. The discussion soon disended into a brawl between AJ and KO that saw Shane take the brunt of a Pele Kick from The Pheonemal One.

Elsewhere John Cena’s opening promo was cut-short by Baron Corbin and the pair will now do battle at SummerSlam, The Usos beat the team of Sami Zayn and Tye Dillinger and then felt the wrath of a more-serious bad-ass looking New Day, and Charlotte Flair was in action with a win over Lana.
