Brock Lesnar, Triple H, Undertaker and Vince McMahon – the stars who have tried to put over Roman Reigns

One thing WWE always needs is a top star.
Hulk Hogan is arguably the first man to really take the mantle as the 'face' of the WWE. The resident poster boy, if you will.
Following Hogan, names like The Ultimate Warrior, Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart, The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin and John Cena have ascended to the throne and with the proverbial title comes great responsibility.
Today, many would argue Roman Reigns is the man that sits in that position.
But he certainly didn't make his way there organically. While The Big Dog was popular during his initial run with The Shield - and the subsequent ones actually - as a solo star, WWE fans have been able to telegraph his 'push' a mile off and they've never been able to get behind it.
A guy like The Rock - who is Roman Reigns' real-life cousin - had to earn his way to the top. He was furiously rejected by fans initially, but his charisma and work eventually spoke for him and fans warmed to him in their own time.
Reigns has never had that. WWE put the rocket on him as soon as The Shield split.
He tied the WWE record for most eliminations in a Survivor Series match with four in the 2013 event and also previously held the record for most eliminations in a Royal Rumble match with 12 in the 2014 event.
When The Shield split in 2014, it was almost obvious he would be winning the 2015 event.
Once he did, WWE tried to have The Rock with him at the very end to save a negative crowd reaction, but that's not what they got. The boos were deafening and Reigns was not the guy they wanted - that was Daniel Bryan.
To try and make fans buy Reigns as the top guy, WWE has tried to give him the rub from some of the biggest stars in the history of the company.
Here, talkSPORT looks closer.
The Undertaker
Not just anyone gets to beat The Undertaker at WrestleMania. In fact, only two men have succeeded in 27 attempts.
One is Brock Lesnar - who broke the streak at 21 victories - and three years later, Roman Reigns.
It has since been admitted this was meant to be Undertaker's retirement match and that would have added even greater significance to the bout.
The night after the match, talkSPORT was in the Amway Center in Orlando to hear Roman Reigns attempt to cut a promo to open the night. Before WWE even got on air for RAW that night the crowd was veraciously booing Reigns.
All the Big Dog said was 'this is my yard now' and he made his exit. The crowd went nuts and if there was ever a time for the heel turn, WWE had it.
Of course, they didn't do that and he was back cutting heavily scripted promos the very next week, much to the chagrin of everyone.
Vince McMahon
When Reigns won his first world title in 2015, Sheamus very quickly cashed in his Money in the Bank contract and scuppered Reigns' big moment.
WWE created the League of Nations stable (Rusev, Alberto Del Rio, Wade Barrett and Sheamus) almost exclusively to feud with Reigns and eventually put him over.
The idea was to stack the odds against Reigns and in traditional babyface fashion, the Big Dog would overcome the adversity to a heroes reception.
Of course, that didn't happen.
When WWE realised this wasn't working, they brought Vince McMahon back into the picture.
Despite being 70 years old, Vince is still easily one of the greatest heels the industry has ever seen and is still very effective in his role.
The night after TLC on RAW, Reigns won the title back from Sheamus and got the best reception to date after knocking down McMahon in the process. Unfortunately, an unfulfilling match with Triple H awaited and it would not last.
Triple H
Seeing as the powers that be weren't happy Reigns had managed to overcome the odds and, more to the point, McMahon, he was ordered to defend his WWE title in the 2016 Royal Rumble match.
On top of that Reigns, had to enter number one. So, in essence, he was defending against 29 other men.
Predictably, Reigns did well. The Rumble is memorable for AJ Styles' debut, but Reigns was right in the mix until Triple H came out at number 30.
The Game eliminated Reigns second to last before getting rid of his former Shield brother Dean Ambrose to secure the Rumble and the belt.
This led to the two facing off at WrestleMania 32 in front of 101,723 fans - according to WWE - in the main event, but the WrestleMania as a whole wasn't received very well.
Styles vs Chris Jericho and the triple threat between Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks earned critical acclaim, but the crowd was dead for the main event.
The flat crowd turned to a disappointed one when Reigns overcame Triple H and reclaimed the title. A long journey of a storyline that didn't deliver the feel-good moment WWE must have hoped for.
Brock Lesnar
The Beast Incarnate has been chipping away at making Roman Reigns for a number of years.
It started at WrestleMania 31. Reigns had won the Royal Rumble that year and earned a shot at Lesnar, a man who had been dominating everyone since obliterating John Cena for the title at SummerSlam.
Reigns was also obliterated, save for a few Superman Punches and Spears. Ultimately, that night was about Seth Rollins, his cash-in and his arrival as one of WWE's next top stars.
They picked their feud back up for WrestleMania 34 where it was thought Reigns would finally dethrone Lesnar, only for the Beast to shock everyone in the main event and retain his title. Unfortunately, this was another big Roman Reigns WrestleMania match that the crowd absolutely panned.
Reigns then unsuccessfully challenged Lesnar for the title in a cage match at the Greatest Royal Rumble before finally defeating him at SummerSlam and beginning his first reign as Universal champion.
Sadly, just two months later, Reigns was forced to relinquish the title as he battled leukemia for the second time in his life.
Having his Shield brothers by his side, he was enjoying the best crowd reactions in a long time, too. Through no fault of his own, things didn't work out once again.
