“Fightful Select learned last week that CM Punk has been in talks to make a return to pro wrestling as an in-ring performer, with sources indicating that AEW is the most likely landing point.”

talkSPORT sources can also confirm that Punk and AEW have been in talks.

Fightful says they cannot report a set date, if a contract is signed or not or any finer details at this time, just that ‘Punk and a company official have had ongoing conversations about an in-ring return.

Punk departed WWE in 2014 after being burned out and frustrated with the creative direction he was heading in.

He embarked on a UFC career where he went 0-2 (now 0-1 after the second loss was recently overturned) before becoming a commentator for Cage Fighting Fury Championships, which is on UFC Fight Pass.

The Chicago-native has steered clear of wrestling since then with the exception of being an analyst on the FOX show WWE Backstage in 2019 and 2020.

That show was cancelled as a result of the pandemic, but fans have still long clamoured for the return of Punk, one of the most popular stars of his generation.

Cody Rhodes once opened up to talkSPORT and explained how they’d held tentative negotiations with Punk early in AEW’s inception.

“As far as the CM Punk negotiations go, everyone heard the famous ‘he got a text from us’. Yeah, of course there were negotiations and he did ask for a great amount of money and Punk is worth a great deal of money.

The price tag becomes a lot more justifiable if you’re genuinely interested in what we’re doing at the high speed we’re doing it. And again, that’s not even specific to him, just in general, if the passion is not there, the money is not there.”

With AEW’s All Out pay-per-view set to go down in Chicago, could the stars be aligning for a CM Punk return?
