Manchester City vs Inter predictions

Manchester City are potentially just 90 minutes away from making history on two counts.

Five English clubs have been crowned kings of the continent before: Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa. City will make it six if they beat Inter on Saturday.

During Pep Guardiola’s tenure, they have been the favourites to lift this trophy at the start of almost every season.

Yet up to now City have continually fallen short. They have dominated the Premier League over the last six years, winning five titles in that time, yet Guardiola’s side have been dumped out of the Champions League by Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea.

They have also suffered elimination at the hands of Monaco and Lyon - neither a European heavyweight by any measure.

City have not been able to replicate their consistent domestic excellence on the continental stage. Until now that is.

Guardiola’s men brushed RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid aside on their way to the Istanbul showpiece.

One more victory would not only see them become Champions League winners. It would also secure the treble following their Premier League and FA Cup triumphs.

Manchester United are the only English side to have achieved that feat. City are on the verge of matching their great rivals.

Nothing can be taken for granted in knockout football, but Manchester City are almost there.

Manchester City vs Inter betting tips

Manchester City are one game away from winning the treble, but Inter are a fine team on their day and should not be written off.

Manchester City to win to nil - 11/8 (bet365)

Manchester City have a formidable record over the last few months.

In the first half of the season, they often played within themselves. But from the end of February onwards they have been almost perfect.

Since that time City have won 19 of 23 matches in all competitions. The exceptions include a 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals after they had won the first leg, and a 1-1 draw with Real Madrid at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

The other two occasions were in the Premier League after Guardiola’s side had already secured the title.

Put simply, when City have needed to win a 90-minute match in the last three months they have done so without fail.

That underlines how daunting a task this is for Inter. Simply putting the ball in the back of the net could be beyond them.

It is not that Inter lack attacking talent. Guardiola would probably welcome Lautaro Martinez into his squad. Former City striker Edin Dzeko will not be short of motivation. Romelu Lukaku is an excellent option off the bench.

But if City were able to shut out Bayern and Madrid in previous Champions League games, they should be able to keep Inter’s forwards under wraps.

Manchester City / Manchester City half-time / full-time - 6/5 (bet365)

It did not take Manchester City long to make the breakthrough in the FA Cup final last time out.

They were ahead within 13 seconds of kick-off thanks to Ilkay Gundogan’s magnificent strike, leaving Manchester United with a mountain to climb from the get-go.

Guardiola would no doubt love a repeat this weekend, although Inter will be focused on keeping things tight early on.

So while City might not have drawn first blood before a minute is on the clock, we fancy their chances of taking the lead in the first half.

From there, they will be hard to stop. Inter’s best chance of causing an upset is by scoring the first goal and then defending for their lives, but Simone Inzaghi will be wary of pushing too many men forward in the opening 45 minutes.

Getting to half-time at 0-0 would be a very decent outcome for the Nerazzurri. But that will be easier said than done.

In seven of their last eight victories in the Premier League, City were ahead at the interval. Inter will struggle to keep their opponents out in the opening period.

Erling Haaland to score any time - 4/6 (bet365)

Manchester City actually amassed more points in the Premier League in 2021/22 than 2022/23.

That was in large part because it took them a while to get used to having an out-and-out centre-forward spearheading the side.

When City were below par in the first half of the campaign, there was some talk that Erling Haaland might be a bad fit for Guardiola’s team.

No one thinks that anymore. A record of 52 goals in as many appearances speaks for itself.

The Norway international is a force of nature. At Borussia Dortmund he scored numerous goals by running in behind, something that is harder to do when you play for City.

But Haaland has barely skipped a beat. He has scored every type of goal this season: right foot, left foot, header, volley, tap-in, screamer. The list goes on.

Who would bet against him making one last statement before the season comes to an end?

Haaland has notched 12 goals in the Champions League this term. Do not expect his tally to remain unchanged over the weekend.
