Sweden v Australia: Bet £10 and get £10 in free bet builders with Betfair

Sweden and co-hosts Australia meet in the third place play-off of the 2023 Women's World Cup in Brisbane on Saturday morning.

Sweden v Australia odds

Home hearts were broken on Wednesday as co-hosts Australia were beaten in their first ever World Cup semi final by European champions England.

The Matildas will head into the third-place play-off as underdogs, as they have done for much of the knockout stage, with Betfair pricing a win for the hosts at 13/8.

Sweden were one of the standout teams of the tournament prior to their semi final defeat to Spain, having knockout the defending champions USA and the highly fancied Japan.

Betfair back the European side to finish the tournament as the third best team, pricing a win at 7/5. A draw is priced at 7/4.

Sweden v Australia preview

The Australian team has caught the hearts of their nation following their run to the semi final of the Women's World Cup, which they have co-hosted with New Zealand.

The Matildas had never gone beyond the quarter finals of the tournament before, and could still book themselves the third place spot on Saturday with a win over Sweden.

Tony Gustavsson's side fell to defeat over England in their semi final in Sydney, losing 3-1 to the European champions in spite of their poster girl for the tournament, Sam Kerr, scoring a fabulous solo effort to equalise just after the hour mark.

The Aussies had previously knocked out last year's Euro semi finalists France on penalties in the quarter finals, a game in which they head in as underdogs, having beaten Denmark 2-0 in their opening knockout game.

The co-hosts managed to finish top of their group following an emphatic 4-0 victory over the Olympic champions Canada, which followed their surprise defeat to Nigeria after their opening day win over Ireland.

Sweden had been backed by many people to make it all the way to the final and even to lift the trophy for the first time, after impressing in their build up to the semi final.

The 2003 runners up, conceded an 89th minute winner against Spain in their semi final, coming less than 60 seconds after the Swedes had equalised through Rebecka Blomqvist.

Peter Gerhardson's side had beaten two previous World Cup winners in their opening two knockout matches, including the back-to-back defending champions USA and the much fancied Japanese.

Sweden, who finished third in the last Women's World Cup, also topped their group, winning all three matches as they saw off South Africa, Italy and Argentina in the opening phase.

Sweden lead their all-time head-to-head against Australia by nine wins to two, though the Matildas did win the last meeting between the two sides by a scoreline of 4-0 in Melbourne in November last year.

Sweden v Australia betting tips

Amanda Ilestedt is still in with a chance of taking home the Golden Boot for this competition, with the Swede just a goal behind the current leader, and Betfair are offering 9/2 odds on the Arsenal player to find the net on Sunday.

Australia will have the full support of the nation on Saturday, willing them across the line to a third place finish, and punters can back the Matildas to put on a show for them and be winning at half time and full time at 9/2.
