After a sluggish start to the season, there are signs that Atletico Madrid might be starting to get their act together.

It is not that long since many were openly wondering whether Diego Simeone had taken this club as far as he can.

Between the end of September and the end of October, Atletico went through a sequence of one win in six matches in all competitions.

Their La Liga title hopes appeared to be over in the autumn, despite a hefty summer expenditure of €185m - more than any other non-English side in Europe. And Atletico had stumbled in Europe too, losing 4-0 to Benfica and 3-1 to Lille.

The mood around the Estadio Civitas Metropolitano has improved since then, however. Following a 2-1 defeat of Alaves at the weekend, Simeone’s side have now won five games on the bounce.

The streak began with an expected 2-1 victory over lower-league outfit Vic in the Copa del Rey, before Atletico won three league games on the bounce against Las Palmas, Real Mallorca and Alaves.

That run has suddenly lifted them back into contention at the summit of the standings, where they now trail Barcelona by just five points after the latter slipped up against Real Sociedad and Celta Vigo.

The most eye-catching result in their five-game winning run was a 2-1 triumph over Paris Saint-Germain on matchday four of the Champions League. It looked like each team would collect a point at the Parc des Princes, only for Angel Correa to dispatch a dramatic winner in the third minute of second-half stoppage time.

It was a vital win for Atletico, who are now up to 23rd at the midway point of the league phase. Finishing 24th or above would extend their participation in the competition into the knockout rounds.

Sparta Prague, whose continental journey began way back in the second qualifying round, rank 26th with four points to their name. There is still work for the Czech team to do if they are to advance to the play-offs, but tricky tests against Inter and Bayer Leverkusen lie ahead.

This is Sparta’s penultimate home game and they could do with at least avoiding defeat by Atletico.

Atletico Madrid have made several attempts to evolve in the Simeone era, but they tend to pick up their best results when they go back to basics.

At their best Atletico are a dogged, intense team. That is not to say they are incapable of playing good football, but the Colchoneros seem most effective when there is a degree of perspiration alongside their inspiration.

Just because they are the bookies’ favourites to defeat Sparta Prague, Simeone will still demand that his players work hard without the ball.

We are thus unlikely to see a free-flowing display from Atletico in Czechia, but they should be able to grind out a sixth win on the trot.

Sparta Prague have tailed off in the Champions League and this could be another disappointing evening.

For all that they face an uphill battle to avoid an early elimination, Sparta Prague have had some success in the league phase of this competition.

They have found the back of the net in three of their four encounters up to now, with the exception being a 5-0 thrashing administered by Manchester City.

In fact, Sparta have scored the same number of goals as Atletico Madrid, who are yet to register a clean sheet in the Champions League.

Simeone will be desperate to change that. His team have been much better of late, but that does not mean they are back to their most defensively solid yet.

Giuliano Simeone to score any time

There are pros and cons to playing for a team managed by your dad. But no matter who his father is, Giuliano Simeone deserves to start against Sparta Prague on Tuesday.

Simeone was in the XI against Las Palmas at the start of this month and he rewarded his father’s faith by finding the back of the net.

Simeone Jr. did not score against Alaves on Sunday, but he was named Player of the Match for a third game in a row.

The Italy-born Argentina international is in fantastic form and we expect him to be involved from the first whistle here.

Given how well the attacker has been playing recently, it is well worth a punt on Simeone scoring against Sparta.
