Exclusive – Groves has made huge ‘blunder’ over re-match deal, claims Froch
Carl Froch claims George Groves made a massive blunder by rejecting his seven-figure offer for a re-match earlier this year.
The London-born fighter will be offered a chance to gain revenge over the Cobra after being named mandatory challenger by the IBF, following a successful appeal of the controversial stoppage in their November bout.
But Froch has told talkSPORT that while ‘Saint George’ will get another title shot, he’s missed out on a potential financial windfall.
“Eddie Hearn and I made him an offer, which was considerably higher than what he’ll get now he’s mandatory,” he told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show. “Now, it’s an 85/15 split in favour of the champion.
“Thaose are the rules and how it’s been for years and years. So he’s made a bit of a blunder from that point view.”
It’s unclear where the fight will take place and Froch admits he’d love to have the bout in his home city of Nottingham.
“I’d love to put the fight on at the City Ground,” he added. “It would be phenomenal to fight at the home of Nottingham Forest. It holds 40,000 and would be unbelievable.
“The magnitude of the event means we need somewhere huge, there is no [boxing] arena big enough. The Nottingham Forest ground would be amazing.”
