Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin trilogy confirmed as Mexican’s next fight with Dmitry Bivol rematch delayed

It's official. Arguably the biggest fight in boxing has been announced, as Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin will finally complete their trilogy.

The pair have met twice before, with the first fight ending in a split decision draw, while Canelo came out on top in the rematch by majority decision.

Both results were contested by fans and media alike, especially the first fight, due to questionable judging, but now Canelo and Golovkin will have the chance to put all controversy to bed.

The previous two fights were held at middleweight, but while unconfirmed, it is likely that this third meeting - on 17 September - will be at super middleweight.

That means Canelo and Golovkin will be competing for the Mexican's undisputed titles at 168 lbs.

This will be the first time Golovkin has moved up in weight having spent the entirety of his career at middleweight, where he is currently the unified IBF and WBA champion.

As for Canelo, he will be coming down from light heavyweight where he fought his last contest against Dmitry Bivol and was beaten by unanimous decision.

This does not rule out a rematch with Bivol, as promoter Eddie Hearn has previously said the Golovkin fight is 'now or never' and then Canelo can rematch the Russian in May next year.
