‘I was the laughing stock afterwards’ – Liam Smith celebrates KOing Chris Eubank Jr by playing Sunday League match in Liverpool only to miss a penalty

Liam Smith went from hero to zero after knocking out Chris Eubank Jr on Saturday night - only to miss a crucial penalty less than 24 hours later.

The Liverpudlian put in a stunning performance in Manchester over the weekend, as despite being the underdog, he stopped Eubank Jr in the fourth round of their fight.

After some even opening exchanges, Smith unleashed a flurry of punches in the fourth to drop Eubank Jr and although he made it back to his feet, he was on unsteady legs and after 'Beefy' pounced once again, the referee was forced to call an end to the contest.

After the fight, Smith said in his post-fight interview: “I don’t know if it was one shot or an accumulation, but I told you all week.

“A lot got made of Chris’ great chin, I’ve got a great chin, but there’s many fighters with better chins who have been knocked out in the past.

“I told you all week, don’t be surprised, nobody can not be hurt.”

Despite the huge high of winning such a big fight and potentially putting himself in line for a world title shot in his next fight, Smith returned to his normal life on Sunday, by appearing for his local football team, Custys FC.

Unfortunately, Smith was unable to record another victory, as his team lost 1-0, with the boxer missing from the spot.

When asked about the game by Jim White live on talkSPORT on Monday morning, Smith laughed: "Can we not talk about that? I missed a penalty!"

This was before Stuart Pearce, who was also a guest on the show, jokingly replied: "Join the club," in reference to his 1990 penalty miss against West Germany that saw England crash out of the World Cup in the semi-finals.

Smith went on to talk about his love of football, saying: "That's something I've always done, when I was a prospect, when I was world champion. I've probably got about as long left in football as I have in boxing.

"But, I've always loved football and it was my preferred sport, but I just wasn't as good at football as I was at boxing.
