Simon Jordan has warned Kieran Trippier he could risk losing his place in Gareth Southgate's 2022 World Cup squad if he joins Newcastle from Atletico Madrid.

Rumours have emerged this week that the LaLiga champion could be ending his three-season spell in Spain to become Eddie Howe's highest earning player this January.

With just six months left on his contract at Atletico and his £25m price tag not an issue for the wealth-injected Magpies, a return to England for the ex-Spurs man looks likely.

However talkSPORT's Simon Jordan reckons the deal wouldn't be in Trippier's best interests.

Speaking on Wednesday's White and Jordan show, the former Crystal Palace chairman said: "The bottom line is Trippier is a good player and I’m surprised to see him leaving Spain to go to Newcastle.

“Because, there is a distinct possibility no matter whichever way you cut it that they could be relegated, and he’s got a World Cup coming up.

“So it’s an incredible decision on his part. He’s risking the position of playing for his country in a World Cup by taking the decision to go to Newcastle.

“I would think the economics of it are very appealing, because there is no football decision here. He’s 31 years of age, so this is his last contract, really, isn’t it.”

Trevor Sinclair went on to make the point that if Trippier's gamble did pay off and Newcastle avoid going down it would be a moment of glory for the right-back.

However Jordan remained convinced that he didn't see the point in the former Spurs player taking the risk, saying: "Or, you can stay in LaLiga with an elite club like Atletico Madrid, where you’re guaranteed to be achieving things.”

Newcastle currently sit three points off safety, and although new boss Howe is adamant he's focusing on his current players rather than transfers, the news of his potential transfer will have given the Geordie faithful a much needed lift.
